Sculptural Contemplation Discovered in Everyday Tools: The Boundary Between Use and Contemplation
I have always been deeply fascinated by daily life and the objects that surround us. In particular, the 'tools' I encounter every day in my workshop have come to mean more to me than mere instruments. Observing these cold, functional objects—strictly designed for specific tasks—I discovered a unique, inherent aesthetic that emerges when their utility is stripped away, leaving only their pure, structural form.

My artistic practice begins with decontextualizing these familiar tools. By removing their original functions and revealing their hidden sculptural beauty, I translate these forms through the medium of ceramics. Through the tactile nature of clay, these objects shed their original cold, metallic essence and are reimagined as softer, more intimate pieces. In this process, the boundary between utility and form, and between tool and art, gently dissolves.

Furthermore, I strive to bestow these ceramic tools with new visual pleasure and unexpected purposes by integrating them with other elements. This is not merely a replication of form, but a process of redefining the essential value of an object. My work invites viewers to reconsider ordinary objects, offering a quiet shift in perspective between use and contemplation. I hope to share a moment of artistic reflection that transcends functional limits—a brief pause where one discovers unfamiliar beauty within the familiar.

ARTWORKS

By connecting its subtle gaps with tools, the piece creates a dialogue between past and present.

Even in an era of constant change, there remains wisdom and craftsmanship passed down from the past—knowledge that can still be reinterpreted and applied today.
Through the combination of tools and a traditional ceramic form, this work reflects on how techniques and artistic sensibilities from different eras continue to influence and shape one another.

Tools have evolved alongside our daily lives and remain an essential part of human experience.
This work combines the forms of tools with traditional ceramic materials to present both the timeless value of ceramics and new functionality, infused with contemporary aesthetic elements.
By incorporating the practical function of a cup, it invites everyday use while offering a fresh experience and inspiration to the user.

It is a work that gives a new meaning and function by transforming the shape of the tool.
A tool is usually used for a specific purpose, but in the work, it maintains its shape and combines it with other objects to create a new expression. I would like to show a new combination by giving it a function called a teapot and cup, which feels contrasted with the tool. The work expressed by transforming the shape of the tool shows new values and possibilities beyond the original function of the tool.

The Intersection of Tradition and Modernity

Based on the Maebyeong, a quintessential form of traditional Korean ceramics, I have recreated the bolt and nut—symbols of industrialization—in ceramic and integrated them into the center of the work. This goes beyond a simple fusion of past and present; it "connects" the modern onto the traditional, illustrating the process of identity being newly reconstructed. While the Maebyeong embodies the aesthetics of craftsmanship, the bolt and nut symbolize modern industrial society. As these two elements interlock to form the core, the work reveals a center of identity that remains continuously connected and redefined amidst a changing era.
