Hongd.made – Brand Introduction

Hongd.made, led by artist Insook Hong, reinterprets Korea’s heritage of mother-of-pearl craftsmanship through a contemporary lens. By combining modern technology—capable of rendering natural mother-of-pearl flexible enough to be treated like fabric—with the meticulous traditional technique of cutting and inlaying shell by hand, the brand creates works that embody both innovation and timeless artistry.

At the heart of Hongd.made is the cloud motif, a symbol historically used to express reverence for natural phenomena such as the sun, moon, wind, and rain. Traditionally featured in royal garments and sacred objects, the cloud pattern conveys dignity, auspicious energy, and the symbolism of longevity as one of the Sibjangsaeng. By transforming this classical motif into bold contemporary silhouettes, Hongd.made elevates tradition into wearable and displayable art.

Each piece is crafted on luxurious silk that enhances the brilliance of the mother-of-pearl surface, producing a sculptural drape and an elegant sheen. The result is a work that feels both historical and modern—an object that carries the spirit of Korean craftsmanship while offering a refined sensorial experience for today’s audience.

Hongd.made continues to expand the expressive possibilities of mother-of-pearl, honoring its cultural roots while presenting a fresh, contemporary identity that resonates beyond time.

The cloud pattern—crafted by combining modern technology that makes natural mother-of-pearl flexible enough to be used as fabric with the traditional craftsmanship of cutting and inlaying pearl shell—has long been used to express reverence and sacredness toward natural phenomena such as the sun, moon, stars, wind, and rain.

By using cloud motifs instead of dragons, which traditionally symbolized the king’s authority, the design conveys dignity and majesty befitting those of high status. Clouds are also one of the Ten Symbols of Longevity (Sibjangsaeng), representing long life and eternal vitality.

This work features a large square silhouette that maximizes the beauty of the pattern. The luxurious sheen of the silk fabric elevates the design, creating the refined volume and elegance reminiscent of a draped scarf.
